Dry needling is well recognized as being
particularly helpful in musculoskeletal medicine and pain
management. Dry needling involves the insertion of fine,
sterile needles tapped painlessly into the skin through a plastic guide
tube.
Once in place the needle may cause a localized
feeling of heaviness, numbness or tingling. The mechanism of action is
not clear but there is thought to be stimulation of very tiny nerve
endings which cause changes in blood chemistry and hormones which in
turn reduced pain and influences healing.
Dry needling relies on using trigger points
for effective treatment. A myofascial trigger point can be defined as a
small area within a muscle which after an injury can remain
pathological as normal for several years, long after the original
problem has healed.
This can cause pain that can refer to other areas,
stiffness, tenderness and autonomic disturbances. Particularly painful
musculoskeletal conditions, for example migraine, neck and back pain,
fibromyalgia and other non specific pain syndromes may be
responsive. Dry needling can compliment physiotherapy,
massage, exercise, hydrotherapy and pilates.
Side affects are few when practiced by a qualified
health practitioner.
