Back Pain Solutions!!

According to Robin McKenzie, author of Treat your own back, 70% of back problems are disc related and are easily resolved with repetitive extension exercises.

Ben Jones, one of our Warana physiotherapists,  has completed a McKenzie course on the Gold Coast and has brought with him the latest research on back pain and how to manage it once and for all.

We’ve always used McKenzie exercises as part of our approach to treating back pain, however we are now emphasizing this amazing program just that little bit more.  And with the results they suggest then why not.

According to the McKenzie Institute there are three categories back problems fall into - Derangement, Dysfunctional and Postural.  Each category has its own unique signs, symptoms and treatment options.

The majority of patients fall into the Derangement category and may require only a few treatments in rooms.  The more complex Dysfunctional syndrome, which is more chronic (has been present for more than 12 weeks), may require ongoing treatment to improve the biomechanical instability of the spine.  Postural syndromes require re-education and exercises at home with occasional reviews to home programs.

When you see a physiotherapist for your back problem at our practice we will perform a thorough assessment which enables us to diagnose your condition.
Once we have decided the cause of your back problem, we may use the McKenzie program in conjunction with our other physiotherapy techniques such as:
  • Maitland spinal joint mobilizations
  • soft tissue therapy
  • hydrotherapy
  • taping
  • cold stretch and spray
  • electrotherapy
  • transversus abdominus retraining (strengthening deep tummy muscles).

We have a strong emphasis on self management - we will educate you about the problem-why you have it and how to manage it.

The more you do at home the less you need to come in and see us.

It’s just a matter of getting the right advice.

Even if you have had your problem for a long time this may be something you haven’t yet tried!!

ARE YOU CARRYING SHOULDER PAIN?

Shoulder problems can be the result of many different causes -
  • stiffness
  • instability
  • weakness
  • neck  related.
The first aim of all shoulder rehabilitation is to identify the underlying cause of the injury.  From there the choice of treatment is simple.

You need to look at cause and effect situations - you may have a tear in the muscle but surgery may not be the first option - stiffness and instability may be the underlying cause.

Surgery alone won’t necessarily fix the problem.

Treatment is now gentler than in days gone by.  totalphysio has had access to courses run by Lyn Watson in Sydney.
Lyn Watson
is one of the pioneers in shoulder injuries in the physiotherapy field and has been responsible for the shoulder rehabilitation of some of Australia’s most well known athletes - Michael Klim and Shane Warne. Lyn recommends heat at the start of every session to ensure full muscle relaxation before using soft tissue massage in the form of gentle kneading and joint mobilizations into specific positions.

The exercise equipment of choice is Theratubing - an inexpensive easy to use elastic tubing which enables you to perform the exercises at home minimizing your physiotherapy visits.
